Water Ribbon

Water Ribbon (Triglochin procerum ) is a native species with tuberous roots that were used by Aborigines for food, after being cooked in earth ovens. The taste was starchy sweet. The leaves often lie on the water’s surface or can stand erect and be up to two metres long. The flower is a dense spike, up to 30cms long that appears in spring and summer with fruiting in late summer and autumn. This plant can be found in the Yea Wetlands in the back lagoons and forms valuable habitat for waterbirds and fish.
